about

Originally released on handdrawnhand:

Radio Static Space Opera is a collection of chamber ensemble pieces I composed in 2015. Over the course of that year, my music took on a fairly radical transformation. My earlier compositions had been highly energetic and active with quick changes of texture. But as I was writing in 2015, I began to want to hear different things in my music–more space, more patience, and more time to reflect. The music on this album was the first fully-formed collection of pieces I composed with this new (to me) approach.

The ensemble is an unusual one–violin, viola, double bass, electric guitar, and electric bass. This was not a musical choice, but rather a personnel choice. I wrote this music for players I had worked with before who I knew would understand what it was about. These are the instruments they happened to play.

Radio Static Space Opera was initially intended to be the name of the ensemble, rather than the name of the album or the collection of compositions. I had planned to write more music for this ensemble, but after we had rehearsed and performed these pieces a few times, I found I couldn’t think of anything else to write for this group of instruments. I continued to write for the same musicians, though in different combinations. So, this particular ensemble was no more, and I began to think of Radio Static Space Opera as the music, not the musicians.
